As part of its centenary celebrations, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland asked the public to pick its favourite from a group of 10 images of the nation's landmarks.
The Lady Victoria Colliery - in Newtongrange, Midlothian - came out on top after more than 20,000 people cast their votes.
The image chosen to represent the colliery was a black and white survey drawing while other candidates were presented in photography or sketches.
According to BBC News, the colliery - which now houses the Scottish Mining Museum - beat the second-placed Glasgow School of Art.
It will be celebrated in a poem to be written by Edinburgh artist Valerie Gillies; and the winning image of the mine will join the 10 finalists in a national exhibition to be held at the Edinburgh City Art Centre next year.
