Coking coal leads charge

Earnings from Australia’s commodity exports are forecast to rise in 2005-06 to around $A117 billion, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural & Resource Economics (ABARE) said.

Total value of Australia’s minerals and energy exports was forecast to reach $A87.2 billion, led by key sectors coal, oil and LNG.

The value of coking coal exports is forecast to rise 64%, to $A6.9 billion, following a substantial increase in contract prices.

ABARE predicted the value of crude oil exports would rise 43% and LNG 49%.

In 2004-05 coking coal recorded a 65% jump in export earnings to $A10.73 billion.
