Wooten replaces James Dean, who has served as acting director since February of this year. Dean will return to his position as director of West Virginia University’s Extension and Outreach, and associate director of the school’s mining extension program.
With a degree from the University of Memphis School of Law and a 30-year background in mining, Wooten’s current and past involvement in industry organisations includes positions with several committees: the Bituminous Coal Operators’ Association Safety Committee, Joint Industry/United Mine Workers of America Safety Committee, American Mining Congress Coal Mine Safety Committee, National Mining Association Safety and Health Committee, West Virginia Coal Association Steering Committee, and the West Virginia Coal Association Law Committee.
Wooten comes to the position from serving as safety director of Mt. State Bit Service. His other professional expertise was gained at Consol, where he served as vice-president of safety from 1982 to 1998; as director of federal government relations for Consolidation Coal; as assistant legislative counsel, assistant general counsel and senior counsel for the American Mining Congress; at US Steel; and as a mine safety consultant to law firms and industry organisations.
“Ron Wooten is a recognised figure in the mine safety community and I appreciate his desire to be a part of our continuing efforts to enhance mine safety in West Virginia,” said Manchin.
“I look forward to Ron’s building on the solid foundation that Jim [Dean] and his staff have established for a safer mining industry.”
Manchin said the transition is effective immediately, and he anticipates completion of the shift by October 1.
