ONE of the few times a horrible stench is welcome is when it is saving your life.

Smelly solution to underground safety

Stench gas is used in underground mining situations to warn miners of impending danger, especially in loud areas where sound alarms cannot be heard.

The powerful odour can be quickly dispersed through underground mines as an alert for emergency evacuations.

MineARC Systems have released a new version of their stench gas unit, which vents and disperses the gas up to 15m from where it is triggered.

MineARC spokesman James Young told ILN that the system was designed and developed in Australia by MineARC’s engineers. It was built and tested by the company’s US arm.

Young said the units were hand-built, with each taking four to five hours to build and test.

The unit features a twin gas system housed in a steel cabinet with reflective signage and pressure gauges to show gas content.

Replacement cylinders are available locally through MineARC.
