UPDATED: Floods could disrupt Qld coal exports

FLOODS in Queensland could damage coal chain supply lines and cause disruptions to exports, which may impact on the price of coking coal just as major companies such as BHP are beginning to ramp up production after the previous floods.

UPDATED: Floods could disrupt Qld coal exports

Tim Schroeders of Pengana Capital was quoted in The Australian as saying there is likely to be an impact on commodity prices and BHP’s result later in the year.

Unlike the situation last year, no mining companies have been forced to declare force majeure in exports as yet.

QR National has also informed ILN that here has been no major disruptions so far.

“QR National has had no major impact on its coal haulage operations on the Goonyella coal system that feeds into Hay Point Coal Terminal and Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal south of Mackay," a QR National spokesperson told ILN.

"There has been no flooding at the company’s depots at Coppabella, Mackay and Moranbah.

"QR National cannot comment on the effects to mine production due to the wet weather.”
