The proposal by Centennial Hunter is to construct and operate the opencut coal mine at Wybong, 20km west of Muswellbrook.
The company said the proposed mine would have a mine life of 21 years with a capacity of up to 10.5 million tonnes per year and could create full-time direct employment for up to 240 people.
NSW Department of Planning Director-General Sam Haddad said the independent panel would hold a number of public hearings and provide valuable expert advice on the mine proposal.
“The panel will focus on the potential impacts on noise, air quality and flora and fauna and will provide feedback to the department about any other significant issues that may be raised in submissions or during public hearings,” he said.
“The hearings will provide an independent forum where key issues can be heard and thoroughly examined to ensure the correct decision is made,” Haddad said.
“It will also ensure that everyone in the community will have the opportunity to express their views and have any concerns examined.”
The panel will be chaired by Dr Andrew Refshauge, former deputy premier and planning minister.
The public hearings will be held in Muswellbrook from October 17, 2006.
After the panel has completed its review, its recommendations will be considered by the department to assist the minister for planning in making a final determination on the Anvil Hill Coal Project.
