The United Steelworkers Local 9346, which represents more than 700 employees at the facility working without a contract since October 31, served the strike notice on January 27, and the represented staff at the southeast British Columbian operation are now officially on strike.
Teck provided no further comment or details in its announcement.
A Dow Jones report following the initial notice said that a vote held early last week was 98% in favor of strike action by USW’s represented workers.
Issues still to be resolved include contribution levels for retirement plans and retiree benefits.
“Teck remains committed to negotiating a new collective agreement,” the company said last Thursday.
The metallurgical coal-producing Elkview has a current production capacity of 5.6 million tons clean per annum and is one of the largest operations in Teck’s portfolio.
