Dr Williams will join the ACA in November, replacing ACA executive director Ralph Hilman, who is retiring in November.
ACA chairman John Pegler credited Williams’ expertise and experience in commercial negotiation and policy advocacy as the right combination to lead the industry body.
“Her preparedness to do things differently has led to important breakthroughs,” Pegler said.
“For example, the industry’s Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue is breaking new ground in community consultation and providing an effective model to address the interests of the community and all stakeholders.
“That strong background, her experience on a wide array of boards both here and overseas, and her record representing the resources sector, means that she has the depth of understanding about how the industry works and what the impact of something like a carbon tax means for us.”
Pegler acknowledged the efforts Hilman had made throughout his time at the ACA and said Williams’ appointment could not come at a better time.
“The concerns in the community about the carbon tax appear to be growing ... that’s why it is so crucial that the coal industry continues to make an articulate and serious contribution to the debate about how we tackle climate change,” he said.
NSWMC chairman Mick Buffier thanked a “dynamic” Williams for her contribution to the minerals industry.
“Nikki has been a strong voice for the industry and the business community, fighting hard for sensible government policies that encourage investment rather than deter it,” Buffier said.
Buffier said the NSWMC would continue to be a strong voice for the industry, but stressed strong political leadership would be vital for the next stage of the industry’s development.
Williams will leave her position at the NSWMC in October.
