A mix of business, industry, government and academia representatives will form the council and help implement the development of clean coal technology in the state.
Premier Peter Beattie said the Government was working with the coal industry to research and identify technologies that will ensure coal can continue to be used as a clean and environmentally friendly source of energy production.
“The council would advise the Government on funding priorities, assess projects and make recommendations on funding for the Government to consider," he said.
Council members include:
- Doug Ritchie, managing director of Rio Tinto Coal Australia
- Peter Coates, managing director of Xstrata Coal
- Neville Sneddon, acting chief executive of Anglo Coal Australia
- Ross Willims, vice-president of commercial relations for BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, chair of ACA Low Emissions Technologies
- John Pegler, president of the Queensland Resources Council, chief executive of Ensham Resources
- Professor Paul Greenfield, senior deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Queensland
- Dr Kelly (Kailai) Thambimuthu, chief executive for the Centre of Low Emission Technology
- Gerard Bradley, under treasurer of the Queensland Treasury
- Dan Hunt, director-general of the Department of Mines and Energy
- Stuart Booker, deputy director-general of the Department of Premier and Cabinet
