Agency director Sean Logan said the New Philadelphia station would be relocated to Cadiz and the Shadyside station would move to Barnesville. The state’s newest station will be located in Salem.
The fourth station will make the state compliant with new federal regulations in the MINER Act which require rescue stations to be no more than one hour travel time from any mine. The Salem station will be constructed by the ODNR’s Division of Mineral Resources Management.
“ODNR makes mining safety a top priority," Logan said at last week’s inaugural Ohio Mine Safety Competition held in Cadiz.
“The changes announced today and the training competition that is being held are ways that we can provide valuable service to Ohio miners and continue to strengthen Ohio's mining industry."
Teams for the competition came from Ohio Valley Coal (Powhatan No. 6), American Energy Corporation (Century Mine), Buckingham Coal, Hopedale Mining, Mountain Spring Coal Company, Rosebud Mining Company (Tusky Mine) and Sterling Mining (Sterling Mine).
According to the Ohio Coal Association, the state ranks seventh in coal reserves in the US with 23.7 billion tons. More than 3000 Ohio residents are directly employed in the state’s coal industry.
